Mastercard announced the successful completion of a pilot that delivered its first authenticated agentic transactions in Vietnam, marking a major step forward for the country’s digital ecosystem.

Agentic commerce is rapidly gaining momentum globally, projected to contribute up to USD 3 trillion to USD 5 trillion in orchestrated revenue of global retail market. AI powered agents are increasingly capable of handling everyday tasks - discovering products, managing subscriptions, and completing purchases - fundamentally reshaping how consumers and businesses interact online. As agentic commerce evolves, trusted, secure and seamless payment infrastructure becomes critical to enable these transactions. Mastercard is at the forefront of this shift, providing the technology and safeguards needed for AI-initiated payments.
Mastercard’s first agentic transaction in the country was conducted with Vietnam Prosperity Joint Stock Commercial Bank (VPBank) and Military Commercial Joint Stock Bank (MBBank), using Mastercard Agent Pay and was initiated by AI agents in a controlled pilot environment, ensuring security, transparency and full consumer control.
The completed transaction was for a ride hailing booking through hoppa, a global mobility provider, and used tokenized credentials authenticated with Mastercard Payment Passkeys to ensure strong customer verification and data protection.
Sharad Jain, Country Manager, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, Mastercard, said: “Mastercard’s first live agentic transaction in Vietnam is an important milestone, highlighting how AI can participate in commerce in a secure and responsible way. With Mastercard Agent Pay, we are enabling trusted interactions between consumers, AI agents and merchants while ensuring strong authentication and transparency. Together with like-minded organizations, Mastercard is laying the groundwork for the next generation of digital commerce in Vietnam.”
Powered by Mastercard Agent Pay
Mastercard Agent Pay provides the safeguards needed for secure AI‑initiated transactions. Each transaction uses Mastercard Agentic Token, uniquely issued to each agent for enhanced security. Consumer consent is explicitly captured, and purchase confirmation is secured via Mastercard Payment Passkeys.
Mastercard will continue to work with other organizations to expand the use cases for secure, authenticated agentic transactions across further industry segments including travel, entertainment, and retail.
Building the Future of Agentic Commerce
Looking ahead, Mastercard is accelerating the growth of agentic commerce across Asia Pacific through additional efforts:
This milestone builds on Mastercard’s growing leadership in agentic commerce across Asia Pacific, following earlier authenticated agentic transactions completed in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, India, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Thailand in 2026. Together, these deployments demonstrate the accelerating adoption of secure, AI‑initiated payments across the region - and Mastercard’s continued progress in establishing trusted, scalable foundations for agent‑powered commerce.
Mr. Phung Duy Khuong, Standing Deputy CEO, Vietnam Prosperity JSC Bank (VPBank) said: “Agentic commerce represents the next evolution of innovative digital payments. At VPBank, we continue to invest in innovative AI driven payment solutions that truly understands individual customer needs. Partnering with Mastercard allows us to elevate hyper-personalization in payments, while ensuring that customers remain fully empowered, informed, protected and in control of their financial journey.”
Mr. Vu Thanh Trung, Vice Chairman, Military JSC Bank (MB) said: “As a technology-driven bank, MB is focused on building payment solutions that are intelligent, high-speed, and inherently secure. At MB, we are not just deploying AI, we are building an ecosystem where AI agents seamlessly and securely empower consumer transactions. Our partnership with Mastercard reaffirms our position as a pioneer, setting new benchmarks for trust and protection in the AI-driven era.”
