In 2007, export turnover of textiles and garments is expected to reach around USUS$7 billion. The target seems realistic after Vietnam joined the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and is calculated based on the results of 2006.
According to official statistics of the General Department of Customs, Vietnam earned USUS$5.834 billion in textile and garment export turnover in 2006, up by 20.59 per cent against 2005. Of which, value of textiles and garments exported to the US was put at USUS$3.044 billion, increasing by 16.97 per cent against 2005. Enterprises which export textiles and garments to the EU recorded a good result in 2006.
Meanwhile, the export of textiles and garments to Japan did not increase much and the export to Taiwan fell. Vietnam’s value of textiles and garments exported to Japan increased by only 3.93 per cent, reaching USUS$627 million. In 2007, Vietnam’s export value to the market will see a higher increase in 2007.
The export to Taiwan - Vietnam’s traditional and the fourth largest market - saw a fall in 2006, reaching USUS$181 million only. Meanwhile, the export to other markets increased sharply, by 67 per cent in the Republic of Korea with USUS$82 million, 30 per cent in Russia with USUS$62 million, 20 per cent in Canada with USUS$97 million, and 351 per cent in UAE with USUS$27 million.
Also, Vietnam’s textile and garment export to ASEAN countries saw a high increase of 37 per cent for Malaysia, 285 per cent for Singapore and a record high figure for Cambodia and Indonesia. At the same time, the export turnover to other Asian markets increased sharply, 148 per cent for Hong Kong, for example.
On the contrary, Vietnam’s textile and garment export to some markets fell, by 99 per cent in China and five per cent in Australia.
Vietnamese textiles and garments enter the EU
In 2006, Vietnamese textile and garment industry witnessed a high growth rate in its export to the EU. Export turnover to most EU countries, including Germany, the UK, France, the Czech Republic, Austria, Poland and Hungary increased sharply. According to statistics by the General Department of Customs, Vietnam earned USUS$1.243 billion from exporting textiles and garments to the EU in 2006, rising by 37.46 per cent against 2005.
Vietnam’s textile and garment export to Germany was the highest among EU countries with a value of USUS$321 million, up by 35.68 per cent against 2005. Germany was followed by the UK with an increase of 43 per cent, reaching USUS$220 million, and France with 37 per cent and USUS$142 million. Vietnam earned USUS$116 million from textile and garment export to the Netherlands, up by 46 per cent, and USUS$109 million from its textile and garment export to Spain, rising by 30 per cent. After good results in 2006, Vietnam is expected to witness a higher increase in its textile and garment export to the EU in 2007.
In 2006, 1,300 Vietnamese enterprises exported garments and textiles to the EU. Of the figure Garment 10 Company and Viet Tien Garment Company earned highest export turnover of USUS$30 million. Triumph International and Quang Viet shared the second spot with USUS$18 million. They were followed by Duc Giang Garment Company with USUS$17 million and Nha Be Garment Company with USUS$16 million.
