EVN Telecom reportedly signed up one million subscribers 18 months after joining the mobile phone service market, becoming the fifth largest telephone service provider in the country.
EVN Telecom said, at its achievement announcing ceremony in Hanoi, that up to 80 per cent of its subscribers use wireless fixed telephone (E-Com).
The companies strategic customers are in rural areas where it is hard to erect telephone lines, an official said.
Minister of Posts and Telecom Do Trung Ta said the one-million-subscriber population marks a milestone in the development of EVN Telecom.
EVN is an important channel to bring information technology to the most remote areas.
EVN Telecom, using CDMA technology, hopes to attain total revenues of over VND3,000 billion in the year.
The CDMA technology-based network plans to erect an additional 1,000 base transceiver stations (BTS) in 2007, raising its BTS number to 2,000, to better serve its clients. These facilities are capable of serving five million users.
In 2006, EVN Telecom earned nearly VND900 billion revenues and served more than 650,000 clients.
EVN Telecom, an arm of the Electricity of Vietnam (EVN), will go public in 2008.
Apart from EVN Telecom, Vietnam is home to other major telephone service providers, namely VNPT, Viettel, Saigon Postel and Hanoi Telecom, together serving more than 30 million subscribers. (The People)
