The Cambodian Tourism Administration is planning to invest US$3.7 million in an infrastructure project in Kep City, 170 kilometers from Pnompenh in the Southeast, with the aim of attracting more arrivals from Vietnam.

The project will open a cruise ship route between Kep City in Cambodia and Ha Tien in Vietnam to meet the increasing demands of Vietnamese tourists to travel to Cambodia.

Moreover, Cambodia will quickly upgrade Xihanucvin international airport to attract more foreign tourists.

The Cambodian tourism sector set a target of greeting two million tourists in 2007, up 300,000 people against 2006.

Along with the garments industry, Cambodia aims to make tourism one of the country’s spearhead industries.

In related news, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia are planning to organize an exhibition on tourist attractions in three countries in Ho Chi Minh City from October 5-7 with the view to speed up tourism cooperation among the countries.

The event, titled “Discovery of Mekong Pearls – Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia – Three Countries One Destination”, is considered the largest ever tourism exhibition between the countries to date.

Statistics from the Pacific Asia Travel Association issued this month show that international tourism arrivals year to date are growing at a rate of over 22 per cent into Cambodia, and 14 per cent into Vietnam.
