Vietnam exported 1.28 million tons of coffee valued at nearly US$1.9 billion from October 2006 to September 2007, or in 2006-2007 crop, according to the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (Vicofa).

Vicofa forecast Vietnam’s coffee output will decrease by 10 per cent-15 per cent in 2007-2008 crop because of unfavorable weather condition.

The association said, local companies signed contracts to export 200,000 tons of coffee at high price in the first month of the new crop.

Vietnam’s coffee export price reached US$1,800 a ton, the record high over the past nine years. The price is predicted to continue jumping in the coming months due to out put decreases in major coffee providers like Brazil.

Vicofa is encouraging its 10 member companies, the biggest coffee exporters account for nearly 70 per cent of the country’s total shipment volume, to apply TCVN 4193:2005 to measure quality of exported coffee. (Vietnam Economic Times)
