EC Calls on Members to Allow Vietnamese Swordfish and Tuna Import
The European Committee February 13 asked its member countries to remove ban on importing Vietnam-sourced swordfish and tuna due to the country is not a member of the Western and Central Pacific Fish Commission (WCPFC).
However, the EC asked Vietnamese exporters to show certificate confirming that fish was caught from seas under Vietnam economic privilege.
Officials from the committee advised Vietnam soon to gain cooperation status with the WCPFC in order to ensure stable fish export to the market.
Spain and Portugal started ban on importing swordfish and tuna from Vietnam early January.
EU countries imported around 279,793 tons of seafood from Vietnam in 2007, valued at US$908.040 million. Of them, Spain bought 48,345 tons worth US$134.5 million. (Vasep)
