Seafood Firms Promise to Buy Stockpiled Catfish
Vietnamese seafood companies are actively collecting stockpiled tra and basa catfish and will buy almost all of the material from farmers in the coming months, Ngo Phuoc Hau, head of the Fresh Water Fish Committee said.
The Vietnam News Agency reported that at the meeting marking 10th foundation anniversary of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), the committee asked to provide VND1.8 trillion credit limits to local seafood companies to buy catfish.
The government has okayed VND1 trillion.
Hau said in the past years, high profits from breeding catfish encouraged local farmers to expand their aquaculture areas. In the first five months of 2008, total catfish output sold to companies increased by 30 per cent on year.
Local companies are now buying catfish at between VND14,000 and VND15,000 per kilo. (VNA)
