Vietnam Oysters Export up 50.3% to US$37.2M in Jan-Mid Nov
Vietnam raked in US$37.2 million from exporting 17,624 tons of oysters as of mid-Nov 2009, up 50.3% in value and 49.6% in volume against the same period of last year.
This is an impressive growth as export of key seafood like shrimp, pangasius and mollusca decreased during the period, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) said, citing the General Customs Department.
The EU was the biggest importer of Vietnamese oysters with 13,590 tons worth US$27.476 million during the period, up 70.2% in volume and 75.5% in value from a year earlier.
Meanwhile, export to the U.S. increased 28.4% in volume and 32.7% in value; to ASEAN up 16.8% in volume and 49.8% in value; to Canada up 8.9% in volume and 12.3% in value; and to China up 509.5% in volume and 286.6% in value.
The VASEP expected that Vietnam will export more oysters after Ben Tre clam was granted the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification Sep 2009. (Vasep)
