Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung has approved the Ministry of Finance’s plan on expanding a pilot e-customs declaration program to three more localities of Lao Cai, Ha Tinh and Can Tho this year.

The Customs Services of Lao Cai and Can Tho will pilot the program from early July and August, respectively, while Ha Tinh will implement it within this year, the government said.

The program has been piloted in Haiphong and Ho Chi Minh City customs offices since October 2005 and been expanded to eight others in Hanoi, Lang Song, Quang Ninh, Danang, Quang Ngai, Dong Nai, Binh Duong and Ba Ria-Vung Tau since mid-December 2009.

Up to US$117.6 billion worth of imports and exports were declared via e-customs procedures at Haiphong and Ho Chi Minh City during the 2005-2009 period, the General Department of Customs said.

The e-customs program, which is designed to standardize the procedures nationwide and shorten the time it takes to clear customs, is part of a larger e-commerce project undertaken by the Ministry of Industry and Trade. (www.chinhphu.vn))
