In the framework of APEC Summit 2006, an important event for the business community is APEC CEO Summit. VCCI is putting the final touch to the preparation of the event to be held on November 17-19. Vietnam Business Forum discussed with Mr. Nguyen Van Thao, VCCI Deputy Secretary General, Executive Director of APEC CEO Summit 2006 on the preparation.

How is the preparation proceeding?
Everything is ready. We have always aimed at practical results, the real interests of APEC business community. The discussion must be both topical and persistent. Therefore, the theme of APEC CEO Summit 2006 is “Towards One community : Creating New Opportunities for Shared Development”. In addition, the CEO Summit will focus on such issues as promoting innovation for socio-economic development, challenges to continued economic reform, narrowing down the economic gap between APEC members, increased assistance to SME development, promotion of IT development, enterprise management, lessons on investment attraction from member economies and Vietnam – a destination of investors.

So far, some 10 Heads of State or Government have confirmed their attendance namely China, Singapore, Thailand, Chile, Mexico, etc. We have also invited international economic commentators from CNN, Time Warner, Asia Inc. APEC CEO Summit 2006 will be participated by three components: Heads of State or Government, international experts and world business leaders.

As the attendance is essential to the success of the Summit, what do you think of the CEO Summit 2006?
I can now reaffirm that the attendance is excellent in both quantity and quality. VCCI has asked co-sponsorship of US Trade Council, American Chamber of Commerce, Japanese Trade and Economic Federation, Chinese Trade Promotion Commission, ABAC Business Consultative Councils to invite Chairmen and Chief Executive Officers of leading groups to attend and do business with Vietnam. So far, some 1,000 delegates have confirmed their attendance including 700 foreign delegates from the US, Japan, China, Russia, Korea, Australia, etc. Their main interests are APEC and Vietnam.

Concerning technical and logistic facilities, with the support of APEC National Committee, CEO Summit 2006 is secured of 800 hotel rooms (400 rooms at five-star hotels), cars with APEC license plates, motorcades escorted by police and moving in security routes. 300 selected students have been trained to serve as volunteers to assist delegates to the Summit.

You said that the delegates are also interested in Vietnam, could you elaborate further?
It is coincidental that APEC 2006 takes place in Vietnam at the time Vietnam is acceding to WTO. It will help Vietnam gain international support in the regional and world economic integration. In fact, APEC business community has special interest in Vietnam, a dynamic and active country in the economic integration. It is also clear that Vietnam is a safe and favourable business environment. Therefore, it is not only an occasion for the delegates to attend the Summit but also to find investment and business opportunities in Vietnam.

It is reported that VCCI will also organize Trade and Investment Forum, is there any difference from CEO Summit?
As2006 is very import to Vietnam with accelerated economic integration and WTO accession. APEC Summit 2006 will also bring to Vietnam many regional and world business leaders. Evidently, it is an opportunity to promote economic and trade cooperation. And VCCI organize the forum to introduce the investment environment of Vietnam to APEC business community.

The two events share the common purpose of ensuring the success of APEC Summit 2006 and promoting economic cooperation in the process of globalization. The difference is that while APEC CEO Summit 2006 focuses on multilateral economy, economic cooperation and solutions to narrow the economic gap between APEC members, the Trade and Investment Forum will promote the understanding, investment and trade relations between Vietnam and other regional economies.

The forum will be held on November 16, 2006, in Hanoi, a day before the APEC CEO Summit 2006 with the theme “Business opportunities when Vietnam accedes to WTO”.

APEC CEO Summit has been organized annually since 1996 beside APEC Summit. It has become an important forum for State leaders, entrepreneurs, experts and policy-makers to share experiences, recommendations and solutions to increase the cooperation among APEC business community.
