The Project “Assisting businesses to apply IT to serve integration and development in the 2005-2010 period” (Project 191) designated to the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) by the Central Government has generated promising results in 2006, the second year of implementation.

Mr Nguyen Van Thao, Director of the Institute of Information Technology for Business under VCCI, said 369 activities were carried out in 2006, exceeding the year’s target by 75.7 per cent.

Seven VCCI-led surveys on IT application situations in businesses showed that local businesses mainly focused investment on hardware, up to 60 per cent. Regarding software application, some 80 per cent installed specialised software on their computers. However, up to 20 per cent only installed office software while only 1.1 per cent employed ERP (enterprise resource planning). Thao added that businesses’ awareness about additional services such as consulting and web design as well as e-commerce remained limited, while up to 97.3 per cent of surveyed companies did not employ online transactions.

Under the plan, there will 609 activities within the framework of Project 191 implemented in 2007. Apart from activities on the enhancement of IT application by local businesses and boosting their awareness in IT applications, VCCI will carry out deeply specialised activities for specific commodity sectors and fields in order to better serve enterprises. In particular, VCCI will build the Distance Business Assistance Centre for the Vietnamese business community, carry out 12 surveys nationwide and cooperate with around 20 localities, raising the number of Project 191 beneficiary localities to 36.
