The Vietnam Post and Telecommunications (VNPT) group will invest US$1 billion to develop broadband services and next generation networks of 300 Gbps this year and next year with an aim to serve an additional 1.5 million Internet ADSL subscribers.
Currently, VNPT is applying the NGN and developing the optical cable infrastructure networks to help expand broadband services and build e-government in Vietnam, the newspaper said.
VNPT will develop a uniform 3G and install 5,000 new base transmission stations throughout the country to provide IP services via Internet, PocketPC to serve prestigious restaurants, banks, aviation and IPs, Vice CEO of VNPT Bui Thien Minh told state media recently.
The broadband services are expected to generate revenues of VND2.25 trillion this year, the newspaper noted.
This year, Vietnam is expected to see an additional 20 million mobile phone subscribers, up 60 per cent-80 per cent on year, telecom analysts said.
Le Ngoc Minh, the director of MobiFone said about 30 per cent of the population use mobile phone services now.
VinaPhone and MobiFone under VNPT plan to boost their capacity in the race with military-run Viettel Mobile, the vice CEO of VNPT said.
Last year, MobiFone and VinaPhone made revenues of VND14 trillion (US$875 million) and VND11 trillion (US$687.5 million), respectively, he added.
Meanwhile, Viettel Mobile posted revenues of VND12 trillion (US$750 million).
Currently, Vietnam has six mobile phone networks serving 24 million subscribers. Vinaphone, Viettel Mobile and MobiFone are largest networks with round seven million subscribers each. (Liberated Saigon, Post)
