The British Cave Research Association announced Wednesday an astonishing discovery about the largest cave in the world at the UNESCO-recognized world heritage Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park.

The cave is so large, the researchers were not able to reach every part of it, said the association leader Howard Limbert.

The newly-discovered Son Dong cave, which is 200 meters high and 150 meters wide, nearly double the Deer Cave in Malaysia with 100 meters high and 90 meters wide, said Limbert.

The cave was among some discoveries by the team’s expedition of the national park from late March to April 14.

In a press release conference with provincial officials, Limbert said the discovery of the new cave will make Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park more famous. However, he warned that, it is dangerous for tourists.

The UK team also detected En Cave with 150 meters high and 130 meters wide and located about the Son Dong Cave.

Separately, experts from the Fauna and Flora International (FFI) found 252 rare primates in a recent survey in the national park, state media reported.

The rare primates included 115 southern white-cheeked gibbons and 137 grey-shanked douc langurs, FFI confirmed. (Youth, Saigon Liberation)
