The Vietnamese tourism sector will concentrate on tapping the domestic market’s potentials from May after it sees a sharp drop in international arrivals, said an official from the Viet Nam National Administration of Vietnam’s (VNAT).

Nguyen Manh Cuong, deputy head of the VNAT said in the context of the global economic slump and A/H1N1 epidemic, all countries worldwide encourage their people to take tours inside the country.

The rates of domestic tours have fallen around 30%, a chance for local people to enjoy more tours, Cuong added.

He said that recently the number of local visitors have increased in many tourism sites, leading to a room fever. This is a good sign for domestic tours.

The VNAT will launch the second phase of “Impressive Vietnam” campaign from May to September this year with many promotional activities after the first phase just ended.

Under the campaign, Vietnam Airlines will continue to discount 20 air routes and operate more domestic flights.

However, the official said, his agency will maintain the set goal to welcome four million foreigners this year.

In the coming time, it will boost tourism promotion programs in the five key markets of China, Japan, France and western Europe, Australia and New Zealand and ASEAN. (Pioneer, New Hanoi)
