Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved a scheme totaling VND1.34 trillion to develop pangasius fish production and consumption in the Mekong Delta region through 2020.

The first phase of the project will need VND800 billion, lasting through 2015, the second phase will cost VND540 billion.

Under the scheme, the region will expand a total area for pangasius fish rearing from 11,000 hectares in 2015 to 13,000 hectares in 2020 mainly in Mekong Delta Can Tho city and An Giang, Tien Giang and Dong Thap provinces.

The scheme also encourages large-scaled fish breeding areas with over 10 hectares and processing plants to set up their own breeding area.

The scheme targets to raise pangasius fish output to 1.5 million in 2010 with export revenue of US$1.5 billion. The revenue is expected to reach US$2.2 billion in 2015 and US$3 billion in 2020.

The PM required the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Mekong Delta provinces to set up breeding areas while joining hands with the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers to discuss measures to improve the fish quality. (Youth, VoV)
