Landmarks of Vietnam-South Africa Relation

  • On December 22, 1993, Vietnam and South Africa officially established diplomatic ties.
  • In 2000, the Vietnamese Embassy in South Africa was set up, and South African Embassy also officially opened in Hanoi in 2002.
  • In April 2000, Vietnam and South Africa signed the Trade Pact, agreeing to provide the mutual most-favoured nation status in the two-way trade.
  • In November 2003, Deputy State President Truong My Hoa, accompanied by a delegation of enterprises, visited South Africa, Mozambique, Benin, and Madagasca.
  • On October 28, 2004, Vietnam-Africa Business Forum hosted by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) was launched with the participation of Deputy Prime Minister Vu Khoan and seven African Ambassadors to Vietnam and more than 400 Vietnamese member enterprises of the forum.
  • In November 2004, 54 Vietnamese enterprises accompanied Prime Minister Phan Van Khai on the official visit to South Africa, Morocco, and Algeria. Business forums between Vietnam and these countries were held and appreciated by enterprises of all parties in terms of information and business opportunities. VCCI Vice President Doan Duy Khuong led the business delegation.
  • On September 1, 2005, VCCI, in cooperation with the Government Office and the South African Embassy in Vietnam, organized the seminar on South Africa-Vietnam Trade and Investment Cooperation on the occasion of the official visit of the South African Presidency’s Minister, South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, and South African enterprises.
  • The South African Heritage Week was held by the South African embassy in Hanoi in co-operation with the Ministry of Culture and Information of Vietnam from September 16 - 23.
