Ba Ria - Vung Tau: Enhancing Seafood Export Competitiveness

A reporting conference of the Project titled “Enhancing competitiveness of Ba Ria - Vung Tau’s export commodities till 2015” was held on 19th August 2008 by the Department of Industry and Commerce with the attendance of Mr Ho Van Nien, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee; Dr Nguyen Van Lich, Director of the Trade Research Institute (the Ministry of Industry and Commerce), representatives and leaders of sectors, offices, districts and towns within the provinces.
The project is chaired by Mr Ho Trung Thanh, Director of the Trade and Environment Research Centre under the Trade Research Institute - the Ministry of Trade and Commerce for the purpose of developing the export activities at high growth rate and in stable manner to serve as a motive for GDP growth; pushing up production and export of advantaged products as well as developing products which are potential for export in the way of improving export effectiveness. Additionally, the project has put forth methods of export structure conversion by exporting more products of high added value, high technology and intelligence proportion, reducing the export of crude commodities.
 
Under the project, the province shall focus on new commodities for export in line with changes in the world market in the ten years to come. Basing on this direction, Ba Ria - Vung Tau’ export shall muster in: Determining new commodities in line with changes in the world market and the province’s advantages with the view to making a break through in the 2008 – 2015 period; developing products with natural advantages and labour such as: seafood, agro-products, garment and textile, footwear leather, etc… In addition, the province shall put forth measures to develop new industrial products of high added value and high technology and intelligence proportion.
 
At the conference, delegates discussed implementation measures and proposed to add the assessment on effectiveness of each heading and competitiveness of each commodity, ISO criteria, HACCAP standard, environmental standards as well as specific forecast norms of each heading for the purpose of better project. “The province shall further focus on seafood development, one strong point of the province and reduce attraction into leather footwear or garment and textile industries till 2015”, affirmed Mr Ho Van Nien.
 
Mr Do Van Long, Deputy Director of Ba Ria -Vung Tau’s Department of Industry and Commerce proposed the project implementation group to supplement opinions contributed by delegates into the project soon to fully complete thereof in the soonest time.
