Vietnam is forecast to report a trade deficit of US$400 million between January and May, the Dau Tu Tai Chinh newspaper said, citing the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s Exports-Imports Department.

The department predicted that exports in Jan-May could be US$4.5 billion and imports would be US$5.7 billion.

In the first four months, the country had a surplus of US$800 million, the department noted, forecasting that trade gap in the first half could widen to US$1.4 billion.

Currently, demand for dollars is accelerating as local firms want to import materials to tap cheap costs on the global markets before the global economy recovers, the department elaborated. (Financial Investment)
