Ba Ria-Vung Tau province is a gateway to the East sea of Vietnam’s south-eastern region. The province boasts great socio-economic development potential, particularly in fields of offshore oil and gas production, ocean shipping and seaports, seafood processing and production, and seaside eco-tourism. With such an important position, the province has sufficient conditions to develop all types of transport like roads, airlines, waterways, and railway to become a depot for domestic and foreign markets.
With a total acreage of 1,975.14sq.m, a population of 821,000 and a population density of 416 sq.m, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province has seven administrative units of Vung Tau City, Ba Ria Township, and districts of Long Dien, Dat Do, Tan Thanh, Chau Duc, Xuyen Moc and Con Dao.
Oil and gas potential: A wide range of oil and gas drills have been carried out on the south-eastern continental shelf and a lot of oilfields have been discovered including Bach Ho, Rong, Dai Hung, and Rang Dong with a total reserve of 20 million tonnes of oil per year. Associated gas and natural gas reserves are estimated at 300 billion cubic meters, of which six billion cubic meters could be exploited per year. Two gas fields of Lan Tay-Lan Do have been discovered in the Con Son Basin with an estimated reserve of 58 billion cubic metres, of which between one and three billion cubic metres are exploited per year.
Seafood potential: Statistics said that Ba Ria-Vung Tau province boasts an abundance of seafood resources, housing 660 fish species and 23 cuttlefish species with an exploitable output of 200,000 tonnes per year. Seawaters there create favourable storm shelters for fishing boats. A total of 5,700 hectares of provincial water surfaces can facilitate aquaculture.
Seaport potential: Ba Ria-Vung Tau boasts great potential to develop seaports with an estimated transportation capacity of 80 million tonnes of goods per year. The Thi Vai River runs through the province and creates a waterway with 25km in length and is on average between 600 and 800m in width, which facilitates the province to build seaports with a total receiving capacity of from 18 to 21 million tonnes of goods per year and a loading capacity of between 40,000 and 60,000 tonnes of goods per annum. The Baria – Serese, with 132km in length, is operational with a capacity of receiving 1.2 million tonnes of goods per year. The Sao Mai-Ben Dinh in Vung Tau City boasts a potential to build a seaport with a capacity of receiving ships with loading capacity of over 100,000 tonnes and with a total transportation capacity of 50 million tonnes of goods per year.
Ba Ria-Vung Tau is a big tourism centre of Vietnam as it has a 150-km clean and attractive coastal line. The province boasts ideal natural scenery and a wide range of historic relics, which are good resources for tourism development.
