Hanoi targets its gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 9%-10% in 2010, compared to 6.7% estimated for this year.

The city also plans to raise the annual target for income per capita to VND36.5 million-37.5 million (US$2,028-2,083) from the current VND32 million (US$1,778).

These are among the targets approved by Hanoi People’s Council Dec 8, including the generating 135,000 new jobs and reduce the number of poor households by 1.6%.

“To achieve a GDP growth of 10% and an increase of 5% in budget collection next year, Hanoi must determine to overcome difficulties and create a good environment to attract investors,” said Pham Quang Nghi, secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee.

However, Nghi admitted that the city’s economic development had not been as dynamic as expected and that traffic congestion and food safety remained two thorny problems.

He said celebrating the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi would be an important event for the capital city and the country as a whole next year.

The four day meetings of the Hanoi People’s Council will last until Dec 11. (VNA)
