Vietnam spent US$5.4 billion on importing 9.75 million tons of steel and iron in 2009, down 20.2% in value but up 18% in volume from a year earlier.
Of the sum, foreign-invested firms bought 2.14 million tons worth US$1.45 billion, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said on its website without giving on-year comparisons.
Japan, China, Russia and Taiwan were Vietnam’s key exporters with respective figures of 1.46 million tons worth US$839.37 million, 1.3 million tons worth US$815.66 million, 1.74 million tons worth US$778.36 million and 1.17 million tons worth US$717.62 million.
In late Jan, Chairman of the Vietnam Steel Association Pham Chi Cuong said Vietnam used 11.772 million tons of steel and steel products in 2009, including half of imports. (Vinanet)
