Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung called on ASEAN nations’ arm forces to boost their military cooperation and foreign partners in an effort to cope with increasing non-traditional security threats.
Dung made the appeal Mar 25 at a reception given to ASEAN senior defense officials who were in Hanoi for the 7th ASEAN Chief of Defense Forces Informal Meeting (ACDFIM-7).
The Vietnamese PM highlighted pirates, natural disasters, epidemics, food security, energy and climate change as challenges facing the Southeast Asian region.
Participants in ACDFIM-7 have reached a significant consensus to boost the cooperation against such challenges, Major Gen. Haji Aminudin Isan Commander of the Royal Armed Forces of Brunei, the host country for the ACDFIM-8, told Dung.
These issues will recur in the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) to take place in Apr and the ADMM and partners late this year. (chinhphu.vn) )
