The European Commission announced that the term, Phu Quoc, has been formally registered as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) in the European Union (EU) for a naturally fermented Vietnamese fish extract.
Phu Quoc fish extract is the 11th non-EU product name receiving the protected status, after Columbian coffee, Indian Darjeeling tea and eight Chinese products.
In 2009, the Phu Quoc Fish Sauce Association in Kien Giang Province applied for a PDO in the EU after many foreign companies used the brand name Phu Quoc fish extract to sell fake products in the EU.
