History and time requirements cause hardships and challenges to Quang Binh, but the creator also endows this land with its own pride, that is to say, the world natural heritage of Phong Nha - Ke Bang, golden sunshine and white sand stretching over Nhat Le Beach, Da Nhay Beach, Princess Lieu Hanh Temple, Marquis Nguyen Huu Canh Tomb and Temple, Dao Duy Tu Fortress, and the legendary Truong Son Trail. All these factors are advantages for Quang Binh to open up its tourism potential like eco-tourism, relaxing tourism, historical tourism and spiritual tourism. In the past years, revenue from tourism in the province has risen sharply, significantly contributing to the overall development of the province. But, to make tourism a "smokeless industry", the province has many things to do, requiring much effort and investment.
Charismatic destination
In 2012, Quang Binh welcomed over 1.2 million visitor arrivals, exceeding the full-year plan by 20 per cent and rising 25 per cent over 2011. Apart from the fascination for its marvellous cave systems, the sea is always one of its other strengths featured by long beautiful beaches with white sand, bright sunlight and blue sea. Perhaps, the highlight of the Quang Binh tourism picture remains forests now, with the exceptional ecological values of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park and local beaches.
In the near future, when Nhat Le Bridge 2 with very modern architecture spans the Nhat Le River and seaside traffic routes are completed, the investment for construction of maritime tourism centres from Quang Trach, Bo Trach, Dong Hoi, Quang Ninh and Le Thuy will create uninterrupted sea tours with various types of leisure travel, cuisine and sea discovery.
Not only famous for scenic beauty spots, Quang Binh has rich history with dozens of historic relics recognised as national and provincial values. This is the foundation for the province to invest in historical tourism, cultural tourism and spiritual tourism. In recent years, some local tourism companies have opened intra-province tours like Dong Hoi - General Vo Nguyen Giap Monument, Dong Hoi - Princess Lieu Hanh Temple - Da Nhay, Dong Hoi - Phong Nha - Tam Cave - Nuoc Moc Stream, and Dong Hoi - Thien Duong Cave - Tam Cave.
Besides, Quang Binh is famous for traditional festivals such as National Day Boat Racing, Drum Beating Festival of Ma Coong ethnic group, Fish Worshipping Festival, and Third Lunar Month Festival in Minh Hoa mountainous district. Visiting these sites, visitors not only enjoy natural scenery but also learn about the culture, history and spirituality of Quang Binh in the past and the present.
New direction for tourism industry
To introduce its tourism products to domestic and international visitors, Quang Binh province has focused much on tourism promotion. To create more tourism products to attract visitors, the province needs to offer more favourable conditions for travel firms to tap local tourism strengths, especially adventure tourism. This direction is creating a strength of Quang Binh tourism, a magnet to international travellers, especially young people. Besides, the idea of arranging conferences in caves is perhaps a groundbreaking direction for the province’s tourism industry.
A tourism leader of Quang Binh province said, “The introduction of new tourism forms not only brings practical benefits to companies, but also reasserts the brand of the Quang Binh tourism industry, featured by high-quality, competitive tourism products on domestic, regional and international markets.”
