Kien Giang Technical - Economic College: Supplying High-quality Human Resources Demand

Kien Giang Technical - Economic College (KGTEC) was formerly Kien Giang Technical College established in 1965 under Decree 1101/GD/PC/ND dated July 30, 1965 of the Ministry of Education. KGTEC has today grown to confidently affirm its important role in the cause of Kien Giang province’s socioeconomic development and in the Vietnamese education system.
 
KGTEC currently trains over 7,000 students under a variety of education programs like full-time, on-the-job, remote and in-service education; trains drivers; and provides postgraduate education and short-term training. At present, the college has 12 college-level branches, 17 professional secondary-level branches, four college-level vocational branches, seven secondary-level vocational branches. Its training branches include accounting, business administration, applied information, automotive technology, mechanical engineering technology, electrical engineering technology, electronics and communication. Besides, KGTEC provides in-house training demanded by businesses and localities with over 20 training programmes, examination classes, level upgrade training and occupational safety for workers. Training contents are designed and prepared specifically for each business and locality. Specially, the college has a driver training and testing centre - the first automated driver testing centre in the Southwest region capable of training over 3,500 drivers a year.
 
To meet training quality improvement requirements, KGTEC actively builds and develops a strong contingent of managers and teachers both in quantity and quality, with 52.4 per cent of teachers holding university or higher degrees. With experienced and enthusiastic staff and teachers; updated training programmes; synchronous and modern equipment and infrastructure systems; and modern teaching and learning software applications, training quality at KGTEC has been enhanced to effectively meet social demands for high-quality human resources. Rector Ho Minh Triet said the college has trained over 40,000 students since 1975. Every year, about 1,000 students graduate from KGTEC. Many former students have become important politicians, entrepreneurs and scientists working in the province and other localities.
 
KGTEC’s significant successes in accelerated scientific research have contributed to improving training quality and boosting the prestige of KGTEC in society. In the past years, the college has had 70 research themes, including 10 themes funded VND1.4 billion. Every year, over 30 innovations are recognised and applied to administration and teaching. Many themes have been applied by businesses like training application at Holcim Kien Giang cement plant.
 
In the process of international integration, KGTEC’s international cooperation has been increasingly expanded, diversified and obtained practical results, thus helping build its prestige and brand name. At present, KGTEC is a partner of World University Service of Canada (WUSC) and the Australian Volunteers International (AVI) which are sending professionals and volunteers to support KGTEC.
 
With its efforts and contributions to training and developing human resources for the cause of national industrialisation and modernisation, KGTEC was awarded the Third Class Labour Order (2001) and the Second Class Labour Order (2006) by the President of Vietnam, the Emulation Flag for Outperformance by the Government of Vietnam, many Emulation Flags from the People's Committee of Kien Giang province. The Party Committee of KGTEC is always recognised an exemplary clean, strong Party cell. Rector Ho Minh Triet stressed, “KGTEC’s achievements in the past 50 years are very honourable and uplifting. In the coming time, KGTEC will make every effort to develop education and training and become a prestigious leading technical worker training centre in the Southwest region.”
