Kien Giang province lies in the South-West tip of Vietnam. It is endowed with an abundance of natural advantages: mountains, forests, plains, river and sea.
Geographical location: Kien Giang borders Can Tho city and An Giang province to the East and South East, Ca Mau and Bac Lieu province to the South, the Siam gulf to the West with 200 km of coast and Cambodia to the North with 56.8 km of borderline. With a seaport and airport close to neighbouring ASEAN countries, the location is most favourable for the province to develop economic relations between the region and areas of high economic growth rates in the world.
Natural area: 629,905 hectares
Population: 1.6 million of three main ethnic nationalities: Kinh, Khmer and Hoa
Administrative units: 13 districts, town and Rach Gia city.
Aquatic resources: The province is rich in aquatic products, from both fresh and salt waters including shrimp, fish, oyster, sea weed, with a fishing area of 63,000 sq. kilometres and resources of 464,600 tonnes of fish and shrimp. The province is developing an off-shore fishing project in the South-East sea with a resource of over 611,000 tonnes and possible fishing of 243,660 tonnes, representing an increase on current provisions of 40 per cent. The province also raises fish on 50,000 hectares of fresh water and shrimp on 5,000-6,000 hectares of brackish water.
Mineral resources: Kien Giang has 152 mines, both large and small, with 23 kinds of minerals: fuel (peat), non-metalic (limestone, construction stone, clay, etc.), metalic (iron, iron laterite), precious stone (quartz, opal.
Tourism potential: The province has famous landscapes such as Phu Quoc island, Chong, Trem, Phu Tu islets, Moso mountain, Mui Nai, Thach Dong beaches, Mac Cuu tomb, Dong Ho, Hon Fat, and U Minh forest. The province is regarded as the second Ha Long bay with moderate climate, mountains, caves, pagodas and islets.
Some socio-economic objectives in 2010:
- Economic growth rate; 13 per cent upward.
- GDP per capita: USD1,000-1,100.
- Rice output: 3 million tonnes; aquatic products: 459,350 tonnes.
- Export value: US$453 million.
- Employment rate: 24,000-25,000 jobs a year.
- Poor households: below 2 per cent (new poverty line).
