Gasoline Price Hike Pushes HCMC, Hanoi CPI to Rise 2.09 per cent, 1.92 per cent on Month

Consumer prices of Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in August reportedly jumped 2.09 per cent and 1.92 per cent on month, respectively, after Vietnam hiked 31 per cent of prices of gasoline to VND19,000/liter despite the recent price cut of VND1,000, Statistic Departments of the two cities said.
 
The CPI rise in Jul of Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi-the two drivers-was 0.54 per cent and 1,65 per cent, respectively.
 
Analysts of the General Statistics Department explained that the difference stem from various psychological sentiments of consumers of the two cities.
 
The Ho Chi Minh City’s CPI hike was driven by rises in prices of transportation, telecom sectors jumping 8.16 per cent, housing, electricity, water, fuel and construction surging 2.43 per cent, food and service soaring 1.49 per cent, the Youth (Tuoi Tre) newspaper said.
 
The market watchdogs forecast that Vietnam’s CPI may be 1.8 per cent-2 per cent in Aug. (Youth Online, Vietnam Economic Times)
