The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) will work with Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to revise the planning of retail distribution systems, which play important roles in the national retail development system in the next two weeks, said Hoang Tho Xuan, Head of the Domestic Market Policy Department.
The move aims to facilitate the zoning of the national distribution system for better competence to fend off the expected influx of global rivals in the post-WTO period.
Competition among retailers is forecast to be fiercer after January 1, 2009 when the country completely opens its distribution market for foreign partners in compliance to the WTO commitments.
Vietnam has great retail market potential with strong competitors such as giant distribution groups like Big C, Metro, Parkson, Co.op Mart and MaxiMark.
In 2008, Vietnam has overtaken India as the most attractive emerging retail market destination, according to the Global Retail Development Index released by A.T.Kearney in June.
Vietnam’s retail sales are set to grow 13.6 per cent a year between 2008 and 2012. (Investment)
