Thai Nguyen City Striving to Become Major Economic Centre in Northeast Vietnam

Thai Nguyen City, 80 km from Hanoi, 50 km from Noi Bai International Airport and 30 km from the Da Phuc River Port, has a developed a railway system linking Hanoi, Lang Son Border Gate, and Cao Bang Border Gate. Thai Nguyen is a gateway for economic and cultural exchange between the mountainous midland and the Red River Delta.

With rich natural minerals and forest projects, Thai Nguyen City has been able to make shortcuts to embrace opportunities to invest and develop mineral and forest product processing industries. The city is home to the oldest steel complex in Vietnam and the first to export the metallurgy industry. To date, the Thai Nguyen industry has developed in all aspects such as metallurgy, mining, mechanics and forest product processing.
With its innovative and dynamic methods and simplified procedures to facilities investors to do business, Thai Nguyen City has determined that social stability and commercial exchange are the foundation for sustainable development and growth. Annually, the city injects a large sum of capital to upgrade urban infrastructure and communication systems to serve social and economic development. With its advantages and potential, the city has become a dynamic economic zone with 1,312 enterprises and nearly 15,000 business households.
Strategically important position
As a political and economic centre of north-western mountainous region of Vietnam, Thai Nguyen City is the gateway for economic and social exchange between the mountainous midland and the Red River Delta. The city is the shortest way for regional economic exchanges with Hanoi as well as dynamic economic zones like Hai Phong and Quang Ninh where there are big seaports.
Thai Nguyen acts as an economic, political, culture, medical, educational, scientific and military centre of the northwest of Vietnam. At present, the city is the third largest training centre in Vietnam with six universities, many colleges and vocational high schools, only after Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. With its strategically important location, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved to develop Thai Nguyen City into a centrally governed city and a key economic zone in the North of Hanoi.
Dynamic approaches
Continuous macro-economic reform has helped boost the economic competitiveness and development, create more jobs and improve living standards of local people. The city spared favourably situated locations in urban zones for companies to do business. Leading banks, insurance companies and financial companies in Vietnam have made presence in the city.
The entire urban traffic system has been rebuilt. In addition, the city also sped up public administration reform to create more opportunities for economic development, to improve the investment environment, ensure social security, and expand industrial zones to prepare locations for new companies to do business. The city has licensed hundreds of projects with investment capital amounting to thousands of billions of Vietnamese Dong each year.
