Khanh Hoa Province's Industry Hits High Growth Rate

With its growth rate of more than 20 per cent, over the past few years Khanh Hoa province has become a leader among the localities of Central Vietnam and the Central Highlands in terms of industrial production. Apart from its main products, including mineral water, sand and frozen seafood, the province's industrial sector has supplied new products, namely canned seafood, terrazzo bricks, fishing boats, plastic-covered tourism ships and industrial gas.

Success from economic programmes

In the 1996-2000 period, the industrial sector of Khanh Hoa province was assigned to carry out two major economic programmes on providing electricity for rural areas and developing sugar production. By the end of 2000, the sector had completed its investment in the Ninh Hoa and Cam Ranh sugar plants, which have produced high quality goods.

At the same time, a programme on consumer and export goods is one of the province's ten major economic programmes for the 2001-2005 period and further until 2010. In the 2001-2005 period alone, the sector will strive to reach a total investment capital of VND 4,400 billion (about US$278.833 million). By the end of 2001, the service had performed VND 2,074.8 billion (about US$131.482 million) with 50 projects.

At the same time, the service has surveyed and studied traditional crafts, including pottery craft in Van Binh and Van Ninh, bamboo and rattan craft in Ninh Hoa, Khanh Son and Cam Ranh, bronze casting and handicrafts in Dien Khanh, mat making in Vinh Thai and iron casting in Vinh Phuoc and Nha Trang, for restoration and development.

So far, some major industrial parks have been planned, such as the Ninh Thuy industrial park with 206 hectares, the Cam Thinh Dong industrial park with 233 hectares and a total investment capital of VND 284.6 billion (about US$18.035 million). Moreover, the industrial sector has developed a list of 30 projects in different fields, namely seafood, agro-produce and forestry product processing, handicraft making, mining, construction material production, textile and garment making, mechanism, electronics, ship building and repair, and calls for investment in these fields.

Growth continuity

Khanh Hoa province now has 303 production establishments, including 107 private enterprises, four joint stock companies and 192 companies of limited liabilities. Their total registered capital reached VND 238 billion (about US$15.082 million). They have created jobs for 2,582 people. This has contributed to the province's industrial production value of VND 3,794 billion (about US$240.43 million) and total output of VND 4,992.2 billion (about US$316.362 million), and export turnover of US131.5 million and import value of US$61 million.

In the future, the industrial sector in Khanh Hoa province will continue to accelerate its development and increase the effectiveness of State-owned enterprises. It will encourage the development of the collective, private and foreign-invested sectors to increase their competitiveness. At the same time, the province will accelerate the development of infrastructure facilities for industrial complexes, including Dien Phu, Dac Loc and Northern Hon Ong, and organise conferences to call for investment in industry. Also, many incentives will be offered to Vietnamese and foreign investors. The province will continue to implement its programme on consumer and export goods until 2010 with a focus on restoring and developing traditional craft villages to create jobs for people in rural areas. The Khanh Hoa industrial sector will continue to tap the existing potential, accelerating market promotion in Vietnam and foreign countries and developing projects on technology and equipment renewal, trademark building and development for its integration into the regional and world economies.
