On January 15, 2015, the Dong Thap Provincial People’s Committee issued Decision 03/2015/QD-UBND launching the Dong Thap tourism development scheme from 2015 to 2020. After three years of carrying out the scheme, the local tourism industry has achieved new development, initially succeeded in branding Dong Thap tourism as “Pure as Lotus Soul” and affirmed its position in the Mekong Delta and in the whole country.
In 2017, the Dong Thap tourism sector welcomed over 3.3 million visitors, roughly reaching the target of 3.5 million visitors in 2020, and earned VND684 billion of revenue, rising 178 per cent and 215 per cent from the year before and the project launch, respectively. To ensure the objective of becoming an important economic branch of the province and one of the first choices of visitors in the Mekong Delta, Dong Thap tourism industry launched action plans and instructive documents for enhancing professional State management, applied the Code of Conduct for public employees working in the tourism sector; and visualised their behaviours at important local tourist sites.
In the past three years, tourism promotion has produced remarkable results. Tourism promotion has been strengthened in scale, scope and quality. Through traditional communication channels and positive social networking effects, integrating tourism communication and boosting the image of a beautiful, friendly province, a friendly, enabling and entrepreneurial government, a dynamic, creative, gentle and hospitable people, the province has managed to create the image of Dong Thap tourism as “Pure as Lotus Soul” and attract more and more investors and tourists.
In the event that the State fund is limited, Dong Thap province has flexibly mobilised and utilised social resources to invest in transport infrastructure facilities connected to tourist sites. Up to now, routes leading to major tourist attractions are quite smooth. In addition to transport infrastructure, other tourism facilities have also been improved. Some infrastructure investment projects for key tourist destinations under the scheme have been completed and put into operation to serve tourists. The number of tourist service facilities has been on the rise, the scale of services has been expanded and service quality has been gradually improved.
To create tourism products unique to Dong Thap, product development and tour connectivity are always defined as key tasks of the tourism industry. Accordingly, the whole sector has focused on building and improving new tourism products, bringing about practical results. Particularly, specialised tourism products such as ecotourism, cultural tourism, spiritual tourism, religious tourism and festival, cottage industry village tour, experience travel and seasonal tourism are well received by visitors and impressed the media. The image of Dong Thap tourism as "Pure as Lotus Soul" is increasingly asserted as the province stands third among Mekong Delta provinces. In addition to constructing and operating new tourist sites, the tourism industry also focuses on creating new tours and special tourism products to exert a pull on visitors. Typical tours include the visit to Tan Thuan Dong Tourist Village - Cao Lanh City, Phu My Island tourist village - Thanh Binh district, Buu Lam Pagoda - Cao Lanh district. The province also considers opening sightseeing routes to Tram Chim National Park.
In addition, the tourism industry always pays attention to standardising and improving tourism workforce quality by devising annual human resource training plans for each type of tourism services and actual demand of local enterprises; regularly organising professional skill training courses like reception, introduction and fostering communications on mass media, training knowledge on responsible tourism development, training basic knowledge on reception and service for local tourism businesses and assisting people to know how to make community tourism.

The sector will strongly develop tourist products from width to depth of tourism products, upgrading the professional service of tourism workers to encourage tourists to stay longer and spend more in the province.
