Biggest Coffee Processing Mill Inaugurated in Dak Lak

Trung Nguyen Coffee Company, one of Vietnam’s major instant coffee producers, inaugurated the country’s biggest coffee export processing plant with total investment of US$5 million on May 20 in the central highlands province of Dak Lak.

Located in Buon Ma Thuot city, the plant is capable of processing 10,000 tons of powder coffee a year. The plant is built on a total area of 50,000 square meters. It is equipped with the most modern technology from Europe.

The plant provides stable jobs for more than 400 workers who belong to ethnic minority groups in the province.

Deputy general director Dang Mo said the factory would help make the already-famous Buon Ma Thuot coffee brand widely known among foreign consumers.

“Foreign customers have heard a lot about Buon Ma Thuot coffee but few know how it tastes because it is mainly exported as beans rather than ground coffee. We want to give them a chance to taste the real Buon Ma Thuot coffee,” Mo said.

Trung Nguyen now exports its products to more than 43 countries and 60 per cent of the new factory’s output will be shipped to the US, Japan, Singapore, Russia, Germany and the Netherlands, among others.

Trung Nguyen has worked together with coffee growers to apply common agricultural practices, namely EurepGAP, to ensure the quality of inputs, said general director Dang Le Nguyen Vu.

“We expect to get certification from international organizations for the quality of our inputs next month so that we can easily sell our coffee to selective markets, and leading American and European food retailers,” Vu said.

Trung Nguyen earlier planned to build an instant coffee factory next to its ground coffee mill in Dak Lak but it then chose southern Binh Duong province as a production base for its instant coffee.

The US$5-million instant coffee plant is expected to come into production by the end of this year and will be able to produce 1,500 tons a year.

Trung Nguyen has over the past 10 years developed a franchised coffee shop chain nationwide.

The company has recently introduced G7-brand instant coffee and Tra Tien tea.

Dak Lak is Vietnam’s key coffee growing area with more than 160,000 hectares. It expects the 2004-2005 crop is expected to turn out 230,000 tons of coffee.

The provincial government is also expected to get a certificate of origin for the “Buon Ma Thuot Coffee” this June.
