A new international airport will be built in Phu Quoc district, home to Phu Quoc Island, a major tourist destination in southern Vietnam, at total cost of some VND2.5 trillion (US$158.2 million), according to a transport official.

Director of the Department of Tourism of Kien Giang province, Le Minh Hoang, said the 800-hectare airport would be capable of handling some 2.5 million passengers per year.

The airport, expected to be operational by 2008, will add to the three international airports in Hanoi, Danang and Ho Chi Minh City.

In addition, the province would invest US$440,000 next year in upgrading its Rach Gia airport terminal in Phu Quoc.

A port harboring international cruise ships capable of carrying up to 2,000 passengers will also be built in 2007 in the same district.

Under an ambitious draft drawn up by the National Civil Aviation Administration, Vietnam will have six international airports by 2015.

During the 2010-2015 period, the aviation sector also plans to invest more than US$8 billion to build the Long Thanh Airport in southern Dong Nai province in order to support Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport which is forecast to be overloaded in 2010. The Long Thanh Airport will be capable of handling a maximum of 100 million passengers per year.

The sector has, over the past 15 years, poured VND1.57 trillion (US$99.4 million) in upgrading three international airports and 22 domestic ones.
