In the Secondary school ( Grade 7 -13 ) the Cambridge University IGCSE is offered at grade 10 and the IB Diploma programme is followed in grades 11 and 12. Examination results have been consistently good. In the most recent examination session, 72 per cent of graduating students gained the full IB Diploma, the highest grade score being 41 out of a possible perfect score of 45.

All graduating students entered their University of choice. The School’s top student gained a full unconditional scholarship to Harvard University. Other Universities and Colleges students entered have included Melbourne and New South Wales in Australia, London, Imperial College and Warwick in UK, Wesleyan, James Madison and San Jose in USA, National University of Singapore, Yonsei and Seoul National Universities in South Korea.

The school mission statement states that “Hanoi International School enables all students to realise their full potential in a caring and positive learning environment. Through broad and balanced international curriculum, the School endeavours to develop responsible, globally conscious citizens. The School strives to develop the whole child as a life long learner with a strong sense of self worth.”

To support this philosophy five developmental strands are promoted. A sound holistic and integrated academic programme for mainstream students. An ESL programme throughout the school that is proven to be effective and which is acknowledged in the educational community in Ha Noi as being successful. Students are immersed in English. They receive both individual attention in small teaching groups and support within their larger mainstream classes. The school accepts students without English at all grade levels.

HIS maintains small class sizes, a community family spirit, strong pastoral and guidance provision and where appropriate attention to learning difficulties. A creative arts programme is promoted that includes visual arts, music-instrument tuition, orchestra and choir experiences and dramatic arts. Annual participation in the MRISA ( Mekong River International Schools Association ) Arts and Cultural festival is seen as one of the highlights of this strand. A rich after-school activities programme is on offer for students throughout the school year.

HIS is careful to nurture its links with the wider community in Hanoi and Vietnam. Students participate in a number of community projects which includes the Friendship Village, Operation Smile, the Peace Village and the Terry Fox Charity Run for cancer.
