Hanoi has set a goal of attracting two million international travelers in 2010 with tourism revenue contributing to 10.37 per cent of the capital city’s GDP, announced an official of the municipal tourism department.

The city also plans to serve from seven to eight million domestic visitors at that time, the official added.

To attain the target, Hanoi is striving to diversify tourism products, build more luxurious hotels and resorts as well as launch more promotion campaigns aboard to advertise its tourism’s image and potential.

In the future, the local hospitality industry will concentrate on improvement, effective exploitation of the key international markets such as US, South Africa and Australia, and generate typical tourism products characteristic of Hanoi, especially eco-, cultural and historical tourism.

At present, poor tourism products and low service quality are the main reasons for the low percentage of vacationers’ return to Hanoi, Phi Thai Binh, vice chairman of the municipal People’s Committee admitted, adding that only 30 per cent of visitors wanting to come back to the city for second times.

“We must action now otherwise we would fail to fulfill the set target,” Binh emphasized.

Currently, Hanoi has around 5,100 rooms of 3- to 5-star standard, including eight five-star hotels with 2,045 rooms and five four-star hotels with 85 rooms and 22 three-star hotels with 1,933 rooms.

The city received more than 780,700 international tourists in the first eight months of this year, representing a year-on-year increase of 8 per cent. It targets to greet 5.7 million tourists in 2006, including 1.2 million foreign visitors, up 22 per cent on-year.
