The Hanoi People’s Committee has approved the construction of a tourism port at Bat Trang pottery village at a cost of VND15.7 billion (roughly US$1 million), aiming to speed up tourism activities along the Red River’s two banks.

City authorities have entrusted the Department of Planning and Architecture to approve the total premises area. The Department of Planning and Investment and the Department of Transport & Public Works are responsible for overseeing the project.

The new port will have a 30 meter-long wharf, embankment, and support constructions and a capacity to process 200,000 passengers per year, many of which are foreign and domestic tourists visiting the 500-year-old Bat Trang ceramics village.

The port will be used by some of the 150-seat boats that run ecological tours on the Red River.

The city Department of Tourism has submitted a proposal to the People’s Committee to become investors in the project.

The work is expected to be built during 2008-2009 period.

Bat Trang, located along the two banks of the Red River dykes, is one of the handicraft villages possesses the largest number of young artisans in the country.

The village earns a meritorious position in a private showcase of around 7,000 pottery objects characterizing different ethnic groups in Vietnam. The secret of Bat Trang pottery's beauty is that it is made by hand. The products are also painted by hand with motifs featuring natural scenes and simple designs, like flowers, birds and animals.
