Consumer Electronics Expo Opens in Hanoi

Foreign and domestic companies in the field of information technology (IT), telecom and consumer electronics gathered at the Vietnam Consumer Electronics Expo 2008 (VCE 2008) in Hanoi on April 9, state media reported. 
 
VCE 2008, jointly organized by the International Data Group (IDG) and Hanoi ICT Association, includes 200 stands from big brands like Canon, Intel, Sony and Panasonic alongside local companies.
 
The 5,000 square-meter floor space of the expo is divided into four main areas, showcasing communication and network equipment, multimedia entertainment, computer and electronics, and software.
 
The four-day event is expected to lure more than 150,000 visitors. It will also attract the participation of guest delegations from the ten countries attending the ASEAN Electronics Forum and members of the Singapore Business Federation.
 
Last year, Vietnamese consumer spent US$1.34 billion buying consumer electronics and IT products, up 43 per cent on-year, according to a report from the German-based international market research institute, GfK.
 
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung ratified the 2010-20 IT development strategy and decided on a ratio of 1 per cent of the State budget for IT improvement.
 
According to an IDG Vietnam study, IT services in the country would develop sharply in the near future and would rank second in the Asia region, after India. (Saigon Liberation, VNA)
