At the complex’s planning period, it had total 2,110 hectares, including 553 hectares in Kien Luong, 524 hectares in Ba Hon and 1,033 hectares in Hon Chong. The complex is used to develop the local construction material production, coal mining, ice production industries.
Rach Gia-Tac Cau-Ben Nhut complex
The complex has favourable infrastructure conditions, with well-developed electricity, water supply and drainage, road and communication systems. It boasts such industries as farm-produce and seafood processing, mechanics, shipbuilding and repair.
The Tac Cau fishing port area in Chau Thanh district had its first phase completed with total 32 hectares and started its operation in late 2003 with a total investment capital of US$7.982 million from official development assistance capital. Kien Giang is promoting the expansion of the complex, second phase, with a total area of 138 hectares and applying for a conversion of the area into the Tac Cau industrial park with total 170 hectares. At present, 28 projects are developed in the Tac Cau fishing port area.
The Ben Nhut-Giong Gieng area focuses on developing rice, sugarcane and pineapple supply areas, so it has great potential for farm-produce processing. The complex has ten frozen seafood processing plants with a total design capacity of 18,700 tonnes per year, a pineapple and fruit processing with a total capacity of 5,000 tonnes of condensed pineapple per year and 2,000 tonnes of canned fruit. It also has a sugar plant, which consumes 1,000 tonnes of materials per day; a composite manufacturing establishment and two electricity pile workshops, capable of producing 24,000 per annum and many other establishments for ice production, rice husking and mechanic repair.
Apart from the two industrial complexes, Kien Giang province has the Ha Tien border gate and Phu Quoc open economic zones. The Ha Tien border gate economic zone has total 4,404 hectares for developing such fields as trade, import and export, tourism, industry and infrastructure. The province is developing a project to submit to the Government, proposing to convert the Ha Tien border gate economic zone into the Thuan Yen industrial park in Ha Tien town. The province is promoting the building of the Phu Quoc open economic zone into a high quality eco-tourist area in Phu Quoc district under the Decision N0 178/2004/QD-TTg dated October 5, 2004 by the Prime Minister. Kien Giang is developing detail master plans for the Thanh Loc industrial park on an area of 250 hectares in Chau Thanh district under the Decree 36/CP dated April 24, 1997 by the Government. The industrial park will focus on developing some major industries, including farm-produce, food and foodstuff processing, consumer goods production, hi-tech and handicrafts.
Enterprises which develop projects in the two industrial complexes and other industrial parks in Kien Giang will be given with priority policies under the (amended) Law on Domestic Investment Encouragement N0 03/1998/QH10, the 1996 Law on Foreign Investment in Vietnam, the Law on Amendments and Supplements to the 1996 Law on Foreign Investment in Vietnam and other decrees.
