Twelve members of the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers' Association (VAMA) are now attending the Vietnam Auto Show 2008, the biggest of its kind so far, in Hanoi.
The five-day event with hybrid cars showed by Honda, Toyota, Ford, GM Daewoo and Mercedes-Benz for the first time is aimed to drive up growth in the automobile industry's most difficult period in a decade.
“Vietnam's automobile industry is expected to experience accelerated growth in the near future, as the population will quickly grow to 100 million and the number of middle-class consumer is now raising,” said Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Do Huu Hao.
Hao highlighted that the Government and relevant ministries and sectors will continue to work out solutions and long-term strategies to facilitate the automobile industry’s development.
A seminar entitled “Preparation for Car Motorization in Vietnam” was also held on August 21 as part of the show, with the participation of representatives from Government organizations, associations, and private enterprises.
Participants expect a booming demand for car in Vietnam from 2020 with a ratio of 38 cars per each 1,000 people, and event 50 units/1,000 by 2025.
VAMA, a non-profit organization, has 17 members, including 11 joint venture and foreign-invested firms. Debuted in 2000, VAMA has made considerable contributions to Vietnam’s automobile industry and created more than 65,000 jobs for local workers. (Local sources)
