Once destroyed by the fierce war, Quang Tri has overcome all the difficulties and managed to successfully achieve its socio-economic objectives, striving to attain high growth rates in all areas.
This province underwent extremely arduous struggle; it lacked infrastructure and economic growth momentum. The province had to strive to mobilise local people to participate in national reconstruction and get support from the Central Government. However, since 1991, the province has enjoyed a steady economic growth rate. In the period of 1991 and 1995, the growth rate was 6.2 percent; the period 2006-2010 increased by 10.8 percent, and 7.2 percent in 2013. The budget revenue increased by 55 percent in 2013, the export turnovers increased by 21 percent compared to the same period in 2012. The living standards of the people in the remote areas have improved. By August 2014, the total investment mobilised for rural development had reached VND11, 266 billion, helping to change the face of rural areas.
The economic structure has gradually shifted positively, which helps increase the proportion of service industry. Infrastructure system of the province has been significantly improved, creating a solid foundation for socio-economic development and attracting new investment projects. Many important works are underway, namely Highway 9, Ho Chi Minh Road, Cu Viet- Cua Tung Gateways, Cua Viet Bridge, Dong Ha Market, Cu Tung and Con Co Tourism Areas, Ai Tu Irrigation Dams, and My Thuy Deep-Water Port. Besides, the infrastructure system of other works like the Lao Bao Industrial Park, the La Lay Border Gate, Nam Dong Ha Industrial Zone, Quan Ngang Industrial Clusters, and the Dien Sanh village has been completed and operated efficiently, contributing to the economic development of the province.
The areas of culture, society, security and defence, medical and education have been maintained and promoted.
Opportunities and challenges
Located in the heart of the transport hub of the East-West Economic Corridor that links Laos, Thailand and Myanmar to the Lao Bao International Border Gate to the ports in the Central Vietnam such as Cua Viet, Chan May, Da Nang, and Vung Ang, Quang Tri has many geographic and economic advantages. This is a very favourable condition that helps Quang Tri expand the regional economic cooperation in trading goods, international transport, commercial development, and travel services.
Moreover, Quang Tri province is located near the human resource training centres in Hue University, Da Nang and Quang Binh. In the province, there are many colleges, private schools and vocational training schools that providing high quality workforce for the industrial complexes and businesses.
In past years, like other provinces in the central region, Quang Tri Province got much attention and support, along with favourable policies to attract investment, which create a much better and more attractive investment environment. Especially, once the La Lay international border gate is inaugurated and put into use, it will help promote the province's economic development to a new level. Currently, the province is calling for the investors to facilitate the construction of My Thuy Deep Water Port, one of the important projects of the East-West Economic Corridor.
So far, Quang Tri has focused on the development of rural areas and new rural works. During a visit to Quang Tri in September, President Truong Tan Sang emphasised that in the next 5 years, Quang Tri needs to develop agriculture and build up new rural works, because the province has a high potential workforce in rural areas. Besides, the province needs to make full use of the strengths of processing forestry and seafood products from the available materials to support farmers and increase exports and imports. Quang Tri should focus its resources to promote key projects such as My Thuy Port and Dong Nam Economic Zone.
With its potential and existing strengths, in the next phase, Quang Tri will continue to build up the province sustainably, promoting the heroic spirit of a "steel" land, not only in the context of war, but also in the economic era.
