Strong growth after equitisation
Located in Da Nang Bay with an area of 12km2 with a convenient transportation system, Da Nang Port is an important gate in the logistics service chain of Central Vietnam. It is also the terminus of the East-West Economic Corridor, linking Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, the main gateway to the East Sea for the whole region.

Da Nang Port including the main port as Tien Sa Port and its member companies, owns nearly 1,200m of berths, capable of receiving vessels up to 70,000 DWT, container ships up to 4,000 TEUs and large passenger ships up to 150,000 GRT. The system of berths, loading and unloading equipment and modern warehouses ensures the capacity of the port to 8 million tonnes per year.

By promoting the advantages of prime location, modern infrastructure, advanced equipment, skilled workers, professional executives to ensure high productivity and service quality, Da Nang Port has continuously gained impressive achievements, becoming a versatile and prestigious seaport. The volume of cargo through the port is increasing; the total revenue from exploitation activities at the port always exceeds the plan. Particularly, the strength of Da Nang Port has been shown quite clearly after the equitisation in July 2014, with an average growth rate of 12 per cent per year (the container increases 20 per cent per year on average), the average profit increasing five times, compared to the time before equitisation. At present, there are 16 regular container shipping lines with the average of 22 to 25 container ships per week, accounting for 65 per cent of the total container area. These impressive figures have helped make the Da Nang Port brand well established in the Vietnamese and regional maritime industries, confidently affirming its position as a major seaport in the region. Together with its sustainable growth, Da Nang Port has contributed positively to Da Nang's socio-economic development through an average annual contribution of over VND65 billion to the city budget.

Investing synchronously and raising competitiveness
After the equitisation, with the confidence in future development and the right strategic orientation on the development container ships, cruise ships and large-capacity ships , Da Nang Port has boldly upgraded its infrastructure and investment in new equipment. In three years, the investment at the port was almost equal to the total amount of investment in the previous 20 years. Da Nang Port has upgraded and expanded Tien Sa Port in the first phase with the total cost of nearly US$10 million, improved the capacity of warehouse logistics project, completed the management and operation of the port by successfully building the quality management system ISO 9001-2000 to improve the quality of the customer services.

Currently, Da Nang Port is continuing to implement the expansion of the Tien Sa Port in the second phase with the total investment capital of VND1,000 billion. It is expected to be put into operation by the end of 2017. Besides the infrastructure system upgrading, Da Nang Port has also invested synchronously in the system of management software for container handling (CATOS) and synthetic goods (CTOS); the system of modern loading and unloading equipment (QCC, RTG, Reach Stacker) helping to stand out in service and more and more satisfy the requirements of the customers on the basis of simple procedures, high loading capacity, fast delivery time and goods safety.

Talking to reporters, Mr Nguyen Huu Sia, General Director of Da Nang Port Joint Stock Company, affirmed that one of the key factors for the fast, strong and sustainable development of the company is human resources. The human resources include not only the employees but also the partners, customers, social community. We always regard human resources as the foundation of development, the most precious assets, so in the past years, Da Nang Port has focused on improving the living standards of our people. Therefore, the employees devote their efforts to the company. With great efforts, Da Nang Port has been honoured as "a Company for Workers", voted by the Lao Dong Newspaper, Vietnam General Confederation of Labour.

Towards an environmentally friendly green port model
Da Nang Port is not only a production business but also the neutral party that ensures the smoothness and safety of goods, people, material and culture through the border gate. Based on that, with orientation to 2020, Da Nang Port aims to develop into a green port in two main pillars: port operation and logistics service. Port operation focuses on container ships, passenger ships and large cargo ships. Logistics services include warehousing, CFS, bonded warehouses, commodity distribution centres. From this orientation, Da Nang Port has gradually increased the proportion of containerised goods, gradually reducing the synthetic goods. More importantly, thanks to the focus on the exploitation and transportation of the container, it has contributed to minimising pollution in the area and Da Nang City, avoiding negative impacts on the environment.

Besides, in recent years, Da Nang Port has attracted many domestic and foreign tourists, contributing to promoting the development of Da Nang tourism in particular and the Central region in general.

Mr Nguyen Huu Sia added that in early 2018, the Da Nang port will put into operation two new berths under the expansion of Tien Sa Port in the second phase, contributing to improving the loading and unloading capacity and service quality to meet the development needs of the Da Nang City and the region. Besides the construction of the dock barge in Lien Chieu for transshipment cargo through Da Nang Bay, Da Nang Port will also invest in the 20 hectare logistics services centre in Hoa Nhon (Hoa Vang) under the project "Development of Logistics in Da Nang City up to 2015 with a vision to 2020", approved by the Da Nang City People's Committee. This is an important contribution to the establishment of a logistics service chain for the central key economic region, step by step making Da Nang Port a large international standard seaport.
