Quang Ngai has potential for tourism development which not every locality is blessed with. However, the potentials have not been exploited effectively so far. Mr Ta Quy, Deputy Director of Quang Ngai’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, says, “With a view to overcoming this weakness, the Resolution of Quang Ngai’s 18th Party Committee Conference identifies the mission of turning tourism into an important economic sector in the province’s economic structure and upgrading Quang Ngai to a central tourist attraction in the Central Highlands region.” Kien Trung reports.
Quang Ngai has many advantageous conditions to develop a diversified range of tourism types. Could you please briefly introduce these strengths and the development orientation over the long term?
Each locality has its own potentials. However, efforts need to be mobilized in order to turn such potentials into tourism products. Quang Ngai has strengths and potentials in natural and cultural tourism resources. Quang Ngai is an important gateway to provinces in the Central Highlands, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar. It is also a strategic gateway to the East Sea from Central Vietnam.
So far, Quang Ngai has 27 national and 168 provincial cultural and historical heritages. The province annually organises traditional festivals, including the festival at Truong Ba Temple (in Tra Bong district), the fish worshipping ceremony in Sa Huynh (in Duc Pho district), whale worshipping ceremony and particularly Hoang Sa Troop Feasting Festival which is only practiced on Ly Son Island. In terms of beach and island tourism, My Khe, Sa Huynh and Ly Son Island (known as the land of garlic) are the most famous attractions. Dung Quat Oil Refinery Plant 1 is a new tourist site. Though a newly opened site, the plant has become a must-see stop for any tourist to Quang Ngai. Tourists interested in heritage tourism will have a chance to visit Truong Luy national heritage which is 120 km long.
Another enchanting feature of Quang Ngai lies in the fact that tourists to this destination are offered a lot of local delicacies, such as Don (a type of Molluscs), goby of Tra River, Thai bai (a type of fish), mirror candy, malt and Ly Son garlic.
During the past years, Quang Ngai’s tourism sector has undergone strong development, yet exposed many weaknesses. The province has not had any completed tourist area which meets standards set by the Government; accommodation establishments witness an increase but quality remains unsatisfactory. To overcome these limitations, in the period of 2011-2015 and orientation to 2020, Quang Ngai will focus on developing tourism with a professional approach, concentrating on major areas; boosting domestic and inbound tourism and encouraging economic sectors to invest in tourism. Quang Ngai strives to be listed among provinces with developed tourism sectors nationwide by 2020.
What endeavours have been made to accelerate promotion, advertising and mobilization of economic sectors participating in tourism development activities? For tourism development, what has Quang Ngai done for the construction of infrastructure and development of plans for tourism services?
With a view to boosting tourism promotion, Quang Ngai has been participating in domestic tourism events. Notably, the province has signed the agreement for co-development with Southern provinces of Lao and Northwest provinces of Thailand to exploit the East West Economic Corridor (EWEC) more effectively.
In terms of investment in infrastructural development, the province is concentrating on completing adjustments to detailed plans of My Khe and Sa Huynh tourist attractions and continuing to make investment in the infrastructure system of these two sites and other works. Efforts will also be made to improve policies on tourism development and focus capital sources on tourism development.
It can be seen that tourism products of the Central and Central Highlands are still overlapping. What has the province done to develop its own unique tourism products?
On December 17, 2011, Departments of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Ngai, Kon Tum and Binh Dinh entered an agreement to establish a chain of products and better exploit the tourism potential of each locality and inbound tourists arriving via Bo Y International Border Gate. In coming time, Quang Ngai will also implement the programme to co-develop tourism among Quang Ngai, Quang Nam, Da Nang, Hue and Quang Tri with a view to exploiting the Central Heritage Road. of Quang Ngai, Kon Tum and Binh Dinh entered an agreement to establish a chain of products and better exploit the tourism potential of each locality and inbound tourists arriving via Bo Y International Border Gate. In addition to traditional tourism products, Quang Ngai will aim at investing in and exploiting beach and island tourism on Ly Son Island. This is an approach appropriate with national tourism development plans. Industrial tourism to Dung Quat Oil Refinery Plant 1 will create a unique feature for Quang Ngai’s tourism allowing visitors to view one of the most modern works in Southeast Asia. The province will also develop a project to invest in the construction of infrastructure of Truong Luy national heritage and complete procedures to submit the dossier to the Government, proposing that Truong Luy be recognised as an extremely important national heritage before developing a scientific dossier to propose that Truong Luy be recognised as a world cultural heritage by UNESCO.
There are opinions that in order for the tourism sector of Quang Ngai to further develop, it is necessary that the province make more investment in services and the infrastructure system. What endeavours have been made to lure more tourism development and investment projects?
Currently, the Quang Ngai Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has consulted the provincial People’s Committee to issue policies which encourage development and investment in tourist areas in Quang Ngai (2012-2015) in order to implement Resolution 04-NQ/TU dated 31 October 2006 which was approved at Decision 2919/QD-UBND dated 7 December 2006. Under this policy regime, Quang Ngai will create a transparent environment and attractive preferential policies. Clean premises will be handed to investors and consultation provided to them after they are granted with investment certificates. An extremely crucial element is the political will of leaders in charge of tourism development. has consulted the provincial People’s Committee to issue policies which encourage development and investment in tourist areas in Quang Ngai (2012-2015) in order to implement Resolution 04-NQ/TU dated 31 October 2006 which was approved at Decision 2919/QD-UBND dated 7 December 2006.
