Hon Gai Port Co. Ltd, a member of state-run Vinashin Business Group, has started the construction on upgrading Hon Gai Port into an international passenger terminal in northern Quang Ninh province.
The port, estimated to cost VND645 billion (US$40 million) for upgrading, is located in Ha Long City.
The old port will have a pier extended by 28 meters to the sea.
The first phase, underway from 2007 to 2009, focuses on basic infrastructure and will extend the port 28 metres into the sea using investment capital of more than VND235 billion (US$14.7 million).
With capital investment of VND410 billion (US$25.6 million), the second phase will see construction of a four-floor arrival and departure station built over an area of 15,000 sq.m.
After reconstruction, Hon Gai Port will be able to receive ships with cargo capacity up to 75,000 Gross Register Tonnage (GRT), 200,000-300,000 passengers and about 100,000 automobiles per year.
Once operational, the port will help boost Quang Ninh province’s tourism.
The number of visitors to Quang Ninh province by sea is expected to reach 216,000 by 2010. (Transport)
