Hanoi’s consumer price index in December is estimated to have increased 1.83% from November, resulting in a full-year rise of 9.56%, according to the municipal Statistics Office.
The office did not give any on-year comparisons.
Ten out of 11 commodities witnessed price increases of between 1% and 3.27% on-month in December. Food and foodstuff services posted the strongest price hike of 3.27%, followed by housing, electricity, fuel and construction materials with 2.86%.
Prices of post and telecoms services stayed almost unchanged from last month, but commodities such as transport, footwear, headwear, beverages and cigarettes went up by below 1%.
Analysts attributed that high costs of input materials and strong dong depreciations have prompted prices of local major products to surge this year.
Thin supply of animal meats amid disease outbreaks and limited goods transports, caused by floods and calamity in the central region, have also resulted in price hikes, the analysts said.
They mentioned the growing consumption demand during the year-end months in preparation for the traditional Lunar New Year festival as another reasons.
In December, gold surged 5.4% over the previous month and 37.02% from 2009 as a result of sharp increases in the world’s gold price while U.S. dollar edged up 3.44% and 7.44%, respectively. (Vietnamplus)
