Son La Urban Environment Company: Building Sustainable Development Business

With its central task as urban management and environmental sanitation, urban electric lighting, drainage systems maintenance, managing gardens, parks, urban trees, and some other service activities, in recent years, the Son La Urban Environment Company has been striving to successfully complete assigned tasks, meet development and expansion requirements of the city, especially by improving service quality and environmental sanitation, innovating productivity tools and improving labour productivity.

Founded in 2004, after 11 years of construction and development, the company now has more than 320 staff members. The company has always paid due attention to taking care of the physical and spiritual life of the employees. It fully implements the regimes and policies for employees as prescribed by the State, such as salary, social insurance, medical insurance, and unemployment insurance.

In response to 2015 Workers' Month with the theme "Trade Union in companion for the sake of enterprises' sustainable development, for the labourers' work and life", the company has organised many practical activities for the workers such as cultural exchanges, competitions of badminton, table tennis and tennis, to celebrate the 57th anniversary of construction sector of Son La.

By taking good care of the physical and spirit life of employees, the company has always achieved good business results. In 2014 the company's turnover reached over VND45 billion, per capita income VND5 million / person / month. It has modernized and upgraded the engineering facilities, vehicles, equipment, machinery for manufacturing investment. The company is always interested in the application of scientific and technical progress in production and improves service quality to meet the rapid development of the locality.

Currently, the company has been requested to be in charge of some large projects with high technical requirements, with an investment of hundreds of billion VND. Typically, the company has attracted two projects funded by official development assistance (ODA), including projects of solid waste (using credit funds of the Government of Norway completed in August 2014) and waste water treatment project of the City (using capital of Germany). The project of solid waste treatment plant in Son La City has systematic and advanced equipment which is the first project to be implemented in the northern mountainous provinces and have national stature; with a capacity of 80 tonnes / day, the total capital of US$12 million.

The company has continued to improve service quality and expand the area; promoting the collection, transportation and disposal to meet the increasing demand of the local units; enhancing services and care to plant trees, urban infrastructure, construction in order to increase revenues, create jobs for labourers; strive to increase average income and revenue of over VND52 billion by 2015.

"For a green, clean and beautiful environment," so right from the early days in 2015, the company has been highly determined and striven to fulfil the tasks assigned. Valuing the human factor and linking the caring for employees with the sustainable development of the unit are factors contributing to the company development.

After 10 years of construction and development, the company has been honoured with many awards such as Labour Order, Second & Third Class of the President; many Emulation Flags and Merits from the Prime Minister, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour, the Association of Urban Environment and Industrial Zone, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
